Reflection

During this project I have learned new skills in film-making and new software, especially After Effects. Gaining new skills in After Effects is especially useful as I am an Illustration with Animation student, so it has come in useful in my animation practice. I also decided to improve my Photoshop skills by trying digital drawing properly for the first time, which again is useful for my own illustrations and animation work.

As well as After-Effects workshops, we also had workshops in projection which was useful as it helped us when it came to choosing how we'd display our final outcome at Night and Day. This was interesting as it opened us up to all the different possibilities of presenting and showcasing your work. I also attended the 'I Swear to Tell The Truth' exhibition at the Imperial War Museum which was also super useful to see different ways that video and film is projected and displayed.

Working collaboratively has been interesting as everyone's different ways of working has influenced the final outcome, and the final outcome wouldn't have been the same if just one type of creative was doing all the work.  We had a group chat to share ideas and arranged to meet up regularly to show each other our work, work together on things and discuss our next steps. However not everyone was always able to meet up at the same time so it was difficult for all 4 of us to meet together.

I engaged in my research and my own practice well and as I am passionate about music and had attended a lot of gigs, I had good ideas of where to gain inspiration and research from (posters, videos, album artwork etc). I looked through my own footage from gigs though didn't decide to use them as it wasn't of anyone on Fiction Records. Although I developed my digital skills I feel I could have improved my animation skills especially because animation can take a lot of time and I was using After Effects for the first time.

The main thing I would improve would be my time management as I had some time off due to struggling with my migraines, therefore didn't finish my animation to the extent that I'd have liked. I was unable to think of an alternative way to show my animation for the final showcase in time as I didn't think it would have shown up well on the material we were projecting on. However I could have instead included some of my illustrations printed onto the material, showing my work in a different way.

In future I would try put less pressure on myself if I felt I was behind and maybe ask for help or guidance from others in my group so they can help ease the workload if I was struggling due to illness.

I would also have probably focused on one practice rather than multiple as I feel I spent more time doing digital drawings rather than animation that collaborates well with the film. This way I could have done a better job and found a good way at using it properly in the final outcome, giving myself enough time to explore different ways it can be used.

I learned different skills, different approaches, different techniques and different ways to collaborate/solve problems by working with students in different areas of design.

In future I would like to explore more with animation and using After Effects, as well as furthering my digital drawing skills.

History of Fiction Records

This year is Fiction Records' 40th anniversary. Fiction Records is a record label that was founded by Chris Parry and owned by Universal Music Group. Chris Parry is the co-founder of Radio X and the manager of The Cure, and with the help of music publisher Fiction Songs Ltd they founded Fiction Records together in 1978. Both were based in London and also maintained a satellite office in New York. The label is best known for being the home of 'The Cure' for over 20 years.  Fiction Records achieved 'The Cure's' first No. 1 album in 1992 with 'Wish'. The song 'Friday I'm in Love' from the album also topped Billboards Modern Rock chart.              Fiction was also the home to other artists and released many acclaimed albums, such as 'Eat's 'Sell Me a God' in 1989 and 'Die Warzau's 'Engine' in 1995. Other artists during this time were from the likes of 'The Passions', 'Cult Hero', and ...

Inspiration from posters and advertisements

I decided to look at some music posters to get some ideas of how music is advertised and for some artistic inspiration. I noticed a lot of music posters have bold colours, shapes and font and want to explore this in my own work. I also noticed the aesthetic of many music posters go with the genre of music. I plan on doing some illustrations of musical instruments with bold colours and shapes inspired by these posters. While researching music posters I came across the work of Craig Frazier . He has been an illustrator and designer since 1978.  “I like to think that one of the explanations for Craig Frazier’s expressive and memorable illustrations is that he has been—and still is—a designer. The search for a concept—and not putting anything down until a concept is found —is what makes the end product great work that communicates, often about difficult subjects.” -  —Ivan Chermayeff,  partner, Chermayeff & Geismar I like his illustrations and the simplici...

Collaboration

We have decided to run with the idea of celebrating the 40 years of Fiction Records in a narrative response featuring all the bands they've worked with in different eras and taking inspiration from how their design and aesthetic has developed and changed over the years. Collaboration in the creative industry is extremely important as some artists/creatives may need some work created for them that they don’t have the skills to do themselves. For example, a musician would like help when creating their music videos and tour videos. So their label would also have a say in this. But a musician would also need an illustrator/graphic designer/photographer to design their album artworks, tour posters, logos etc. They might have multiple creatives doing different things therefore they’d have to collaborate and get rights so they can all create work together. In this project I collaborated with my group by trying out animation doodles over film and video that the filmmaker came up wi...
